This ebook edition contains the unabridged Complete Works of Frances Hodgson Burnett with a detailed and functional table of contents. Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (1849 – 1924) was an English playwright and author. She is best known for her children's stories, in particular The Secret Garden (published in 1911), A Little Princess (published in 1905), and Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885-6). Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in Cheetham, near Manchester, England. After her father died in 1852, the family eventually fell on straitened circumstances and in 1865 emigrated to the United States, settling near Knoxville, Tennessee. There, Frances began writing to help earn money for the family, publishing stories in magazines from the age of 19. In 1870 her mother died and in 1872 she married Swan Burnett, who became a medical doctor after which they lived in Paris for two years where their two sons were born before returning to the US to live in Washington D.C. There she began to write novels, the first of which (That Lass o' Lowries), was published to good reviews. Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1886 and made her a popular writer of children's fiction, although her romantic adult novels written in the 1890s were also popular.

Treat yourself to these old-fashioned classics of Frances Hodgson Burnett. She is best known for The Secret Garden, A Little Princess, and Little Lord Fauntleroy, but she has written for adults, too, and I loved her Emily Fox-Seton novels, which I will review separately. Most recently, I read A Lady of Quality, which I will also review in a separate entry.

Yes, these are old-fashioned, and yes, the writing style is wordier and more flowery, but I can't get enough of these tried and true books.

Hours of reading pleasure for less than a cup of coffee!

Highly recommended

The Complete Works of Frances Hodgson Burnett Unabridged edition by Frances Hodgson Burnett Romance eBooks Reviews

I love it. There is flowery language, some hard passages, but in general I love reading Ms. Burnett's writing. Great stories and characterizations.
The only thing better than reading one Burnett story is reading another and another and another................
This is an easy condensation of many, many amazing stories. If you haven't read anything, besides
The Secret Garden or other children's literature...here is an amazingly sweet (not saccharin), sometimes spiritual
journey, a different glance at life.
I wanted to read some of the other stories by FHB. Nice all in One pkg.
Having read the entire book from end to end, it is now clear to me why the other books did not endure as The Lost Prince, Little Lord Fauntleroy, and The Secret Garden did. Most of her writing is too melodramatic for the likes of us. But if you DO manage to slog your way through them, you will learn a lot about conversation in those days, rules of society, the place of women and men - the lack of social mobility without wealth, the speech (in particular Lancashire and Yorkshire accents), and what happens when the British and Americans mix on both English and American soil. I am going to keep this book. It makes me feel very lucky to have been born into a world where education and hard work (and a good job) can free a woman from the shackles of an unhappy marriage. Her books tell you a lot about the sad plight of the poor and the lower middle class, and a lot about the blindness of the upper class and clergy (and society in general) to the injustice of that. If you watch Downton Abbey and then read these books, you have a clearer picture of English society in those days from both ends of the economic spectrum. It was well worth the price.
I didn't realize that the same person wrote The Secret Garden and such books as Little Lord Fauntleroy. These books are definitely for children, but I did like them as a child. I got the collection to get an overview of Burnett's works, but I have not read most of the many works included. There is a strong moral theme in the works I read, but they are not too preachy. They themes seem a bit off beat, which makes the books more memorable.
Most of us know Frances Hodgson Burnett as the author of THE SECRET GARDEN and A LITTLE PRINCESS. This unabridged complete works is a treasure trove of her stories for those who adored one or both of the above mentioned books, or read with fascination elderly library editions of the Rackety-Packety adventures. There is even an amazingly inventive Christmas themed story "Behind the White Brick" that I had not seen since discovering it in a grade school library many years ago. This is a great volume for parents and grandparents to have ready for those beloved youngsters requests to 'read me a story.' Excellent value too!
I love this author, and was delighted to find this e-book, but it's not really complete. I recently read one of her books called "Two Little Pilgrims' Progress A Story of the City Beautiful", and as far as I can see in the table of contents, it's not included (it's available separately as another kindle book). But there's a lot here that's well worth the purchase. Of course "The Secret Garden" is an old favorite. But I really loved "The White People", which I've never read before. Unputdownable!
